– Benin main's city, Cotonou, hosted yesterday the International Conference on Fake tablets traffic in the world, mainly in African countries. Many heads of State: Denis Sassou Nguesso from Congo, Mamadou Tanja from Niger, Abdoulaye Wade from Senegal, Faure Gnassingbe from Togo, François Bozize from Centrafric, Blaise Compaore from Burkina-Faso, Thomas Boni Yayi from Benin, Jacques Chirac, former French President; Some representatives: African Union's representative, European Union's representative, the General Secretary of the United Nations' representative, Pope Benoît 16's representative, Nigerian minister of health, researchers, experts in health... attended to the rich debates of this historical meeting.
According to Jacques Chirac, leader of the gathering, fake tablets generate 32 Billion Fca Franc ($73,5 Million) and provoke 200 000 deaths per year in the world. “Fake tablets traffic is the new crime against humanity”, he stated yesterday before the participants of the conference. Philip Okuya, Congolese expert and researcher in medicine mentioned that fake tablets represent 10% of the whole medicine consumed in the world and 6% for Africa. Basing on World health Organization's new statistics, Dr. Falilou Ayebo, president of Benin chemists' Union, argued that fake tablets traffic is growing deficiently in the world and worst in African countries for several reasons. “First, fake tablets traffickers' desire to earn easily money; second, youth unemployment and third, consumers' poverty who prefer, in detriment of drugstore's medicines, the fake tablets easily accessible, but very toxic for human being”, he explained, stressing up the results of many years of research in this respect. Dr. Henry Ayinadou, technical commission's member of the conference said that fake tablets are, most of the time, mismanufactured in adding drugs or narcotics. They are over or under dosed and willingly mislabeled by traffickers. “Fake tablets are prevented of quality”, he pursued, pointing out drugs traffic is mounting in the world.
Advocacy of Heads of State
Abdoulaye Wade, Senegal president stated that fake tablets sold in his country per year represent about 6 Billion Fca Franc ($13,7 Million). In his view, African leaders together have to discourage the traffickers who import fake tablets and drugs to affect people health. “We are expected to find the right way for fighting against fake tablets and narcotics consumption. This way, it is to go to the root of the traffic. All of us know well where fake tablets and drugs come from. We hope our Western friends (Europeans) help us in this regard », he said, suggesting the setting up of a General Inspection of medicines in Africa. According to him, it will be a powerful controlling instance for medicines traffic within the continent (Africa).
In the same vein, Blaise Compaore, Burkina-Faso president added that more than 250 drugstore's medicines are affected by the fake tablets in his country. “Unfortunately, these latter jeopardize citizens health”, he argued. To overcome the situation, he proposed to African leaders and his colleagues to strengthen medicines control systems and reinforce health policies in African countries. “These are some vigorous strategies to save people health”, he concluded.
Besides States involvement, Thomas Boni Yayi, Benin president, is expecting the international Community engagement to stop fake tablets and drugs traffic in developing countries. “I have engaged my country in this struggle and no one could stop me”, he asserted, applauded by participants.
Jacques Chirac mentioned the next step for countries, is to provide means in view of controlling medicines quality. “Nowadays, among four medicines in the world, one is a fake tablet”, he revealed, calling for Heads of State's determination to sensitize populations and implement a real fighting policy against fake tablets traffic all other the world. That is the Appeal of Cotonou signed by the Heads of State, ministers and representatives of authorities presents at the conference.
At the end, the former French president Chirac invited Heads of State, politic leaders, presidents of State or private Institutions, researchers and experts in medicine, chemists... to partake to the Geneva International Conference which will hold in 2010. This conference, as he said, will be devoted to the signature of the international Convention for eradicating the fake tablets and drugs in the world.
Once again, Benin opposition parties' leaders: Benin rebirth party (Rb) of Rosine Vieyra Soglo, Democratic revival party (Prd) of Adrien Houngbedji, Democrat social party (Psd) of Bruno Amoussou, African movement for democracy and progress (Madep) of Sefou Fagbohoun and Key power party (Force Cle) of Lazare Sehoueto, have boycotted the international conference.
