Recent FAO inquiry's results stipulate that rice is the second key production in Benin after cotton. In 2008, rice production is about 240,000 tons. According to FAO experts, citing seeds quality, Benin will become very soon self-sufficient and could even export the excess of his rice production. Gregoire Akoffodji, Benin Minister of Agriculture is aware of this and asserts Benin farmers' will is to increase, in the coming two years, the current rice production. “The current rice production is about 250,000 tons and we wants to attain 300,000 tons in 2011”, he says today on State television.
On phone, Chabi-Gani Saré, director of Agriculture mentions, today at Cotonou, that FAO grants half of $1 Million USD for the rice campaign 2009-2010 in Benin. According to FAO's statistics, rice importation in West-African countries is about 6 Million tons in 2001 and could attain 11 Million tons in 2010. “It's to say that African countries have to promote agricultural sector”, he says. “FAO's donation will be devoted to intensify rice production in order to overcome food crisis in the sub-region”, he concludes.
According to FAO inquiry's results, Benin has a great potentiality in rice production. He possesses more than 322,000 hectares of rice-growing field estimated at $ 55 Million USD. But only 8% are cultivating now.
